Conclusions
Throughout this series I have explored the elements I believe are essential for achieving consistent results with traditional ICM.
We began by defining ‘traditional’ ICM, touching on its history and the equipment involved. From there, the focus shifted to camera movement and subject choice, and how the relationship between the two strongly influences outcomes.
Building on these foundations, I examined the considerations a thoughtful photographer can make—from engaging with abstraction to refining the practical aspects that lead to more predictable and compelling results.
Finally, I reflected on key challenges encountered in my own journey, with suggestions on how their impact can be reduced.
Final thoughts
ICM is not a single technique, nor are its results governed by chance. While it may appear unpredictable, that perception often stems from a lack of understanding of the variables involved.
With awareness, control, and a mindful approach, that unpredictability can be reduced. What remains is not randomness, but interpretation.
A key takeaway is that ICM does not seek to record reality. Instead, it offers a way to reinterpret it, providing the freedom to shape what is seen into something more personal and expressive. That said, the pillars of photography cannot be overlooked. Lighting, composition, and form remain essential - ICM cannot compensate for a lack of these foundations.
What next
This series covered what I consider the key foundations of traditional ICM - that is the tools needed to successfully capture the types of images most are familiar with.
Building on those foundations, I will be starting a new series that expands on the ICM experience. This will cover more advanced concepts and techniques, all of which work towards elevating both the enjoyment and artistic appeal of ICM photography.
