streetwalker part 5 - after dark

Part 4 of the streetwalker series was initially slated to serve as the project conclusion. However, a subsequent weekend visit to New York presented fresh opportunities to explore, the results of which I believe are worth sharing.

In the earlier episodes, I didn't get around to experiment with the capture long-exposure images after dark. This was partly due to exhaustion following a tiring day coupled with a nagging concern over lighting of the subject. On this trip I appreciated the opportunity to explore further, and to see what, if anything could be achieved when walking the evening streets.

The lead up to holiday season brings festive crowds to the streets

I quickly discovered that streetlights and brightly lit store windows could indeed provide an adequate source of light for both the subject and foreground when used intelligently. This lighting has the power to make the subject stand out against a dimly lit background or night sky.

In instances where the light on the subject was insufficient, opportunities for silhouettes arose as subjects moved toward brightly lit backgrounds.

As the weather changed, rain-soaked streets offered wonderful reflections of both light and color, adding another layer of potential and interest. Under these conditions, colored umbrellas and bright winter clothing further enhanced the visual appeal.

Admittedly, I began with low expectations due to the aforementioned concerns over lighting, but my confidence grew with early attempts showing promise, increasing as the evening wore on following each positive result.

Below is a selection of favorite images captured during my night walks. As always, any input or questions you may have can be shared via the Comments section below.

This is definitely a technique I will continue to use as opportunities arise and continue to enjoy the experience.
