Pep goes mobile

First published November 6, 2020

I have been experimenting with Pep Ventosa’s ‘in-the-round’ technique for some time now and continue to discover new ways to push the boundary. For those who may not be aware Pep is an artist who developed a technique that takes a makes number of pictures taken around a subject into a result that has the qualities of an impressionistic painting.

My interest was piqued after finding an article online that recommends shooting in jpeg (rather than RAW) to keep the file size at a reasonable size. That got me thinking, as the quality of the individual images taken during the process does not have to be the absolute best, then would the technique produce acceptable results when shot on a mobile phone?

This image is the result of 41 images taken on an iPhone, layered and blended in Photoshop using the same methods that I use for my other work of that nature.

Given the fact that all that is required is the camera you have in your pocket I think this is pretty remarkable and opens the door to so many opportunities.

Now there really is no reason not to get out there and have fun with this technique.

So…. what are you waiting for?

Update 3/25/2023

Below are additional examples taken with a mobile device since the original above. I think it can be confirmed that the simple phone in your pocket is more than adequate to cretae exciting images using this technique.
